Archaeologist without borders
Valentino Nizzo (Todi PG, 1975), received his laurea with honors from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2000, where in 2007 he also obtained the specialization and the PhD in Archaeology (Etruscology curriculum). He completed in 2013 the post-doctorate in "Archeologia globale e memoria del passato" at the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane di Firenze, publishing the results of his work in the book “Archeologia e antropologia della Morte: storia di un’idea”, Edipuglia (Bari 2015).
In 2010 he won the prize of Etruscologia e Antichità Italiche promoted by the association Storico-Artistico-Culturale "Ing. Carlo Cecchini". In 2014 he obtained the national scientific qualification as associate professor in the disciplinary scientific sector 10A/1 (archeology).
Since 2010 he has worked in the Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo, offering his services first (2010-2015) to the Soprintendenza Archeologia dell’Emilia Romagna with headquarters in the Museo archeologico Nazionale di Ferrara and then (2015-2017) to the Direzione generale Musei in Rome, where he was responsible for the promotion, communication, and cultural accessibility of the national museum system.
On May 2, 2017, he became the Director of the Museo Nazionale di Villa Giulia following an international selection process.
He has published over one hundred articles, including three monographs. His interests center around historical, artistic, and material culture issues relating to Etruscan/Italic civilization, early Greek colonization, the relationship between archaeology and anthropology, as well as, more generally, funerary ideology, the history of archaeology, and the sociological value of museological and archaeological communication.
